🙌This Women’s History Month, we’re celebrating the power of young women driving change in their communities.

📚In 2019, two Oxnard students, Kimberli Oregel and Desiree Luis, set out to learn more about the person their middle school was named after, Richard B. Haydock. After reading the book “Strategies of Segregation: Race, Residence, and the Struggle for Educational Equality” by historian David G. García, they learned how Haydock had supported racist policies that segregated and disadvantaged Mexican American students in Oxnard’s schools.

🗣️Rather than keep the information to themselves, Kimberli and Desiree spoke up. With support from their teacher, they presented their findings to the Oxnard School District Board of Trustees and advocated for a new school name that better reflected the values of their community.

Their courage and persistence made a a real impact. In 2020, the Oxnard School District officially renamed the campus Dr. Manuel M. López Academy of Arts & Sciences.

👏This local story is a powerful reminder that leadership has no age requirement and that young women’s voices help drive change in our community! 👏
