Windows update + BitLocker recovery key: what customers need to know

After recent Windows updates, some PCs may reboot and ask for the BitLocker recovery key before Windows will start. This does not always mean the PC is broken or hacked. BitLocker can ask for the recovery key when Windows detects a change it considers security-sensitive, such as certain update, firmware, TPM, or startup-environment changes. Microsoft also has a documented current issue affecting some Windows 11 enterprise setups after the April 14, 2026 update.

What is the BitLocker key?
It is a 48-digit recovery key used to unlock an encrypted drive when Windows can’t do it automatically. Microsoft also notes that Support cannot retrieve or recreate a lost BitLocker recovery key for you.

What should you do now?
Before the next reboot or update, make sure you know where your BitLocker key is and save a backup copy.

How to find your BitLocker recovery key

1. On another device, go to your Microsoft recovery key page and sign in with your Microsoft account.
2. Look for the device and match the first 8 digits of the Recovery Key ID shown on the BitLocker prompt, if needed.
3. If your PC is managed by work or school, the key may be stored in your organization’s account, so contact IT or sign in with your work/school account to check.

How to save a backup copy of your key in Windows

1. Click Start
2. Type BitLocker
3. Open Manage BitLocker
4. Click Back up your recovery key next to the drive
5. Save it in a secure place separate from the computer

Best practice:
Do not keep your only copy on the same PC. Keep a secure backup so a future restart doesn’t turn into downtime.
