𝐁𝐞𝐫𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚 𝐏𝐚𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐲𝐚 aka double headed eagle 🦅
The Berunda Pakshiya is a key part of South Asian art, rooted in the shared history of Sri Lanka and India. In Sri Lanka, especially during the Kandyan Kingdom, it was an important symbol of royal power and military strength. Sri Lankan artists gave the creature a distinctive design with curved beaks known as Gira Hota and elaborate, flowing feathers inspired by Liya-wela (creeper) patterns. Often, it is shown holding elephants in its talons to represent supreme strength. This closely resembles the Indian Gandaberunda, a mighty avatar of Lord Vishnu. In Hindu mythology, the Gandaberunda appeared as a two-headed bird with immense power meant to conquer the fierce Narasimha. It remains a significant symbol today, particularly as the state emblem of Karnataka.
Outside the Indian subcontinent, the double-headed bird has had a strong presence in global history for thousands of years. Its earliest known origins go back to ancient Mesopotamia, where it appeared in Sumerian culture as a symbol of the god Ningirsu. From the Near East, the symbol spread to the Hittite Empire and was later adopted by the Byzantine Empire. There, the two heads represented the emperor's control over the East and the West. This imperial legacy continued through the centuries. The double-headed eagle became a key element in the heraldry of the Holy Roman Empire, the Russian Empire, and various Eastern European countries. While the visual style differs from the sharp, predatory eagles in European coats of arms to the ornate, mythical birds in Sri Lankan wood carvings the fundamental idea of the creature as a guardian of power and a symbol of dual vigilance remains universal.

"They do not know who their ancestors truly dealt with. The traditions and masks that remain today may simply be a way of showing those old encounters. While you worship them as gods now, they might have been nothing more than different beings from another world who lived among us long ago. It is likely that they did not possess physical bodies like the ones we have today." ⁉️
