We need to ACTIVELY supervise our dogs with kids of any age! If we cannot actively supervise their interactions together, then the best thing is to separate dogs and kids. Doing so can help prevent tragedies of all sorts. I don’t care what breed, age, or temperament. The most perfect and sweetest of all dogs can and will get annoyed. Push past annoyance and that’s when injuries (or worse) can happen. A dog’s growl is a warning. A dog’s bite is a defense measure.

•DOGS ARE NOT JUNGLE GYMS. Allowing a child to crawl, stand or jump on, or hang on your dog is not safe for the dogs or the child. Not only can it result is a dogs bite but can also injure the dog.

•HUGS ARE A GIFT FOR HUMANS. Hugs given to dogs can often cause anxiety, which can result in a bite

•DOG BOWLS/FOOD/TOYS/CRATES ARE NOT CHILDREN’S PLAY THINGS. Dogs can be territorial and possessive. Guess what that can result in…. A dog bite.

•LET SLEEPING DOGS LIE. Seriously. Don’t allow a child around a sleeping dog. They may startle them awake. When dogs are startled…. They can react by biting.

Don’t have dogs? Teach kids to ask before petting a strange dog. Some dogs love attention, others don’t. Teach kids to be dog friendly before teaching dogs to be kid friendly.
