Six decades of service is built on the shoulders of incredible leaders. 🌟

As part of our 60th Anniversary Diamond Jubilee, we are introducing three honorees who embody the spirit of Bergen Volunteers. First up: our former CEO, Janet Sharma!

If you know Bergen County, you likely know Janet’s work. Under her tenure, our organization was named a Volunteer Center of Excellence by Points of Light. When Hurricane Sandy hit, she chaired the Bergen County VOAD, which managed a $10 million recovery project that became a model for long term recovery operations for the entire state.

Janet’s passion for community didn't stop when she retired from her CEO role in 2013. She continues to champion our county’s older adults as the coordinator of Age-Friendly Englewood and the Age-Friendly Bergen Roundtable. She also served on the Governor-appointed Age-Friendly Advisory Council, which helped inform the NJ Department of Human Service’s Blueprint for Aging in New Jersey that was adopted in 2024.

Janet’s civic leadership has been recognized by numerous organizations throughout Bergen County, and she has served on several boards. She currently serves on the NJ Governor’s Council on Volunteerism and is also a member, past-president and current treasurer of the Rotary Club of Englewood and treasurer of the Garden Club of Englewood.
