Starve the Monster, Feed Your Future
There’s a monster that lives in the quiet moments. It thrives in the shadows of shame, boredom, and isolation. It whispers promises of relief, of escape, of a moment’s peace. It’s the monster of addiction, and its hunger is insatiable.

Every time you give in, you feed it. And with every meal, it grows stronger, its voice louder, its grip tighter. Don't Feed the Monster.

But starving a monster isn't a passive act. It leaves a void, an emptiness that screams to be filled. The most crucial part of recovery isn't just about saying "no" to the monster; it's about consciously choosing what you will feed instead.

You have a choice in what you nourish.

Instead of feeding the monster isolation, feed yourself connection. Call a friend. Go to a support meeting. Sit with family. Connection is the light that makes the monster shrink.
Instead of feeding it shame, feed yourself self-compassion. Acknowledge that this is a disease, not a moral failing. Treat yourself with the same kindness you would offer a friend who is struggling.
Instead of feeding it secrecy, feed yourself honesty. Speak your truth to a therapist, a sponsor, or a trusted loved one. Honesty breaks the monster's power, which is rooted in darkness.
Instead of feeding it boredom, feed yourself purpose. Rediscover a hobby. Learn a new skill. Go for a walk. Volunteer. Purpose gives you a reason to fight for a future the monster wants to steal.
Recovery is an active process of nourishment. You are turning your attention away from the beast and toward the garden of your own well-being. Each healthy choice, each moment of connection, each act of self-care is a meal the monster cannot have.

It will roar. It will rage. It will tell you it's starving. Let it.

Because while it grows weaker, you will be growing stronger. You will be feeding your hope, your health, and your future.

The choice is yours, one moment at a time. Don't Feed the Monster. Feed yourself.
