This underwater robot was designed to gather valuable metals like nickel and cobalt from the ocean floor while recognizing and leaving important marine ecosystems intact. The prototype, called Eureka 1, was developed by Impossible Metals. It uses sensors to identify and collect rocks on the seafloor. Metals like these are in high demand with the increased need for batteries as the energy grid transitions from fossil fuels to renewable energy. The valuable metals typically come in the form of polymetallic nodules, which are typically dredged. However, dredging seriously harms marine ecosystems. Impossible Metals says that its invention will help avoid some of this harm.
