Peekskill Project 6 artist Mark Andreas has given his sculpture some new life, and a new name, to help it withstand these frigid winters!

Check out his fantastic description of his work!

FUN FACT FRIDAY

Many people don't realize that some of the sculptures along the riverfront are permanent (or semi-permanent) remnants of Peekskill Projects that HVCCA has held over the past 15 years!

This sculpture in Peekskill Landing Park is by Mark Andreas, and was part of Peekskill Project 6 in 2015. Since installation several years ago, Andreas has returned to modify the piece to withstand time, and this brutal winter! Here is what he had to say about his work:

The "Peekskill Dragonfly" is made of stainless steel and cedar, both materials are commonly used for boat building because of their strength, durability, and resilience to extreme weather conditions.

Andreas built Peekskill Dragonfly to react to the natural forces in the environment surrounding it. Between spring and fall, the artist fills a basin in the sculpture with water every several weeks. When the water is added, the sculpture becomes a dynamic cantilever as the sculpture’s wings rise. The sculpture then is attuned to the environment and is impacted even by the slightest breeze, reminiscent of sailing ships operating on the Hudson.

Over a period of time, the water is pumped out through the force of “capillary action”. As the water is released by this force of nature, the wings start to fold down. After the wings are completely folded, the cycle will repeat when the basin is refilled with water.

During the winter months, the water is drained and the sculpture stays dormant to protect itself from the cold, freezing temperatures, and blistery winter winds.

Make sure you check out this fantastic sculpture, as well as the many others along the riverfront, which is accessible all year round! We have maps available at the museum of all of the artwork ans sculptures throughout Peekskill and along the riverfront.

Andrew Barthelmes 06/02/2017

Peekskill Project 6 artist Andrew Barthelmes is in a new exhibit, Undercurrents, opening June 10th from 5 to 7 pm at the Dorsky museum! See below for more info.

Here is what Barthelmes had to say about his work:

"The Hudson Valley is a place that has seen tremendous change as it transitions from an industrial to post-industrial economy. My work is about the people and places that are somewhere in between. I grew up in Peekskill N.Y., just north of the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant, which is now set to close in 2021. Many people don’t know that this property was once the site of an amusement park. In my painting Indian Summer, I attempt to capture the debate about its closure, combining fear with hope, while breaking the boundaries between the past, present and future."
