Great to welcome Regent Johnson to Summit Academy today.

Summit Academy students and staff participated in an exercise in direct democracy thanks to the visiting organizers of the Peekskill Community Congress. Jason Angell and Jocelyn Apicello have been organizing forums of the Peekskill Community Congress, encouraging all Peekskill residents over the age of 13 to share issues and solutions they see for Peekskill; these challenges and solutions will be on a ballot for a city-wide vote.

Summit students brainstormed challenges and possible solutions and then broke into small groups to refine their thinking. Challenges identified include the lack of affordable housing, the lack of jobs in Peekskill, inadequate and therefore dangerous street lighting, and the need for a greater range of affordable and diverse activities for young people. The next Peekskill Community Forum will be held Saturday, February 9 at the Saturday Academy held at Peekskill Middle School, from 10:45 am to 12 pm.
