I have plenty of summertime still to enjoy, but I can’t wait for cooler temperatures to get back out hiking to some waterfalls.

There’s something about a summer afternoon along the Southeast coast. The day begins with sunshine, warm sand, and calm waves, then, almost without warning, dark clouds build on the horizon. The wind shifts, lightning dances across the sky, and the rain comes down in sheets.

These storms can be destructive, leaving flooded streets, damaged homes, and broken trees in their wake. But they also remind us of the incredible power of nature. And when the storm finally moves offshore, the air feels fresh, the colors come alive, and the sunset often paints the sky in ways only a thunderstorm can.

The beauty and the power are inseparable. It’s one of the many reasons I never tire of photographing the Southeast coast—it has a way of reminding us that nature is both breathtaking and humbling.
