Thirty nine years ago today during the Nuptial Mass at half past twelve o’clock Father Timothy Collins declared Mr. David Stuvland and Miss Susan Anne Jarvis, husband and wife. It sounded so cool -
Dave wore a white tux with tails and I wore a dress that had a train that stopped past the first pew. The large bow at my waist a nod to Princess Diana and my veil cap a look alike to Jackie Kennedy.
Saint Mary’s was filled to capacity. I’m not sure if we really invited that many people or if folks just wanted to witness the fact that Dave was indeed going to marry and not be a priest- the main topic of the homily.
That day was significant, but it was actually a few days prior that hit the hardest. In the Catholic Church prior to the sacrament both parties are asked to sign a covenant. It lists the various things you are asked to abide by throughout your life as a married couple. It was at that moment as I held the pen that I realized there was no going back. We were doing something really big. I was 20 -I’m not sure if I had signed anything that held weight other than my driver’s license up to that point. Dave being much older and way more mature had probably signed something of importance - he did still live with his parents-soooo…The vows we agreed to came to life along the way.
In sickness and in health was tested right away and has been with us ever since.
For richer or poorer- we have been all over the map on this one. He worries daily I never think about it - balance
For better or worse- oh yes, at different times I will guarantee that one of us could have driven away and not looked back. Thank God we had to sign that paper.
The “better” - so much better than worse.
To love and to cherish until death do us part- this one makes me smile. This is the one that counts. This one is easy. because good, bad, or ugly we love each other - deeply.
We both have grey around our temples and lines of life on our faces. Our various aching muscles remind us of the passing of time. We thank God every day for each and every blessing in our lives and we are humbled by His love - we couldn’t have done this without Him. .
