Let's talk about an RV "red flag" that might actually just be normal wear and tear. 🚩🔍
If you’ve ever looked at a used RV and noticed the wood trim is swollen and bloated at the bottom, your first thought is probably a hidden structural leak. But it pays to know what you're actually looking at.
Take a look at this piece of factory trim I just pulled out of a coach. The bottom few inches are totally ruined from moisture. However, the floor is solid as a rock, the wall is dry, and the roof is perfect. It’s just years of normal water hitting cheap original materials.
You will see this exact same cosmetic swelling happen in three main areas on almost any used RV:
Next to the shower (from daily splashing)
At the base of the entry door (from tracking in rain or dew)
At the bottom corners of slides (where natural moisture and shoes hit)
Faux wood trim acts like a sponge in these spots. If you're out shopping for a motorhome and spot some bloated trim—but the floors are firm and everything else is dry—don't panic. It’s often just a simple cosmetic fix, not a total nightmare.
Look for the real structural signs of damage, and don't let a little wet factory trim spoil a great find!
