Types of service dogs!
What PGI trains:
Service dogs help by performing functions for a person that is limited by a disability. An applicant must be able to handle the dog independently in ALL public settings.
•Mobility impairments (wheelchair, unstable walking, balance difficulty)
• Medical Response (seizures, epilepsy)
•Visual impairment/Hearing impairments (partial)
•Other physical disabilities
• Facilitator Assisted Service dog helps individuals with disabilities or other developmental delays and the parent/caregiver is certified to handle the dog. ( find more information on PGI website)
Along with, Facility Dogs
Facility dogs are trained to perform animal assisted interventions at a facility: hospitals, medical facilities, nursing homes, and other facilities. In order to apply for a facility dog, you must work at the facility at least 30 hours per week with direct client contact. Our dogs must live in the home of a staff member and not at the facility.
Check out the PGI website for more details: https://givingindependence.org/
NOTE: We often receive calls from people asking us to certify their personal dogs as service dogs. We truly appreciate your interest, but unfortunately, that’s not a service we provide. Our program is designed to raise and train service dogs from puppyhood. Each dog enters our program as a young puppy and lives with one of our trainers for 18 months to 2 years. While we come together weekly for structured training, the real work happens every day—our dogs are continuously learning, practicing skills, and gaining public access experience in a wide variety of environments. Because our trainers are with the dogs 24/7, they are able to closely observe their behavior, temperament, and progress across hundreds of real-world situations. This level of consistency and oversight ensures that each dog meets the high standards required. If a dog does not meet these standards, they are thoughtfully placed into loving homes as family pets.
