Horses like Kali are so often talked about in terms of miles, usefulness, and what they can’t do anymore. The question comes up again and again: “Why keep her?”
When things get tough, I hear another question sometimes too — “Why don’t you just stop?”
This is why.
Kali, and horses like her, are the ones who reached a point where the world decided they were “done.” But their lives didn’t stop mattering. Their need to be safe, to be cared for, and to be loved didn’t end just because their working days did.
I made a commitment to them — that they would have love, that they would be safe, and that their days would be filled with gentle hands and people who show up for them. A place where they don’t have to earn their keep. Where their value isn’t measured, it’s simply understood.
Kali tells us every day where she wants to be. She chooses the quiet time, the calm space, the slow moments. That kind of trust — a horse choosing to stay, to settle, to breathe — is built over time. It comes from patience, from showing up, from keeping the same promise day after day.
And it’s a promise carried by more than one person. It’s held up by the volunteers who show up every day to care for them and love them, and by the supporters and community who stand behind this work, helping us provide the sanctuary they deserve and keep our commitment to them. Horses like Kali are here because people believe their lives still matter.
Sanctuary isn’t just about rescue. It’s about keeping that promise to the ones already here.
And that promise is something we hold together. 💛

Hi ! Our rescue is in desperate need of some help with fundraising. Is there anyone who might have some time to volunteer to help fundraise?
The monthly cost to keep the rescue running is about $3,000 a month. Since Covid, I have been the primary support of the rescue and I am at the point where I just don't know how I can keep it up. This year, what is supposed to be our biggest fundraiser, Giving Tuesday, we only raised $50. We really need help!
I work full-time so have very little time to fundraise and where we are, although it is BEAUTIFUL, it's not condusive to having onsite events.
ANYONE who can offer some help, I and the horses, would greatly appreciate it!
Please message me or send me an email to [email protected].
If you would to donate, you can donate on our website at https://equineassist.org/donate/.
Or via Zelle to [email protected].
Any help would be amazing!
Thank you!!
