Flashback to that time when I was an environmental portrait photographer. Irving Penn, Annie Leibovitz, Mark Seliger, Richard Avedon, they all were my inspirations at the time. Somehow, I wound up as a still life studio photographer. Something to do with paying the mortgage and taking care of a young family.

I was given the opportunity to photograph wine pioneer, Peter Mondavi, Sr., at his Charles Krug Winery in Napa Valley as part of a marketing campaign. It was pouring down rain that day in 2007, and in walks this little old man with his rain jacket and hood down over his head. The first thing he says to me is, “Ok, let’s get this over with.” You can imagine what was going through my head at the time. 😓😂 I literally had 10 minutes with him, but once he stood in front of my camera, his eyes lit up and he gave me that warm smile. And then just like that, he was gone. There’s no shortage of pressure as a photographer. Either budgets are at stake or time is short and you better nail that shot. It’s life in a nutshell.

Of course I had to put a dramatic space tune to this shot. What a fun Hoka shoot this was. And you get to see how the sausage was made. 😁 (sorry the music doesn’t play in FB. Only in IG).

This was a fun one. Our creative brief from Hoka was to shoot these shoes floating on a bed of dreamy clouds. So along with a fog machine, and our very talented photo retoucher, Michael Truncale, I think we pulled it off.
