Each July 4th, America celebrates the words "all men are created equal" and freedom. These words contained within our Declaration of Independence never intended to include Native Americans or African Americans. These words were empty and misleading until this day, June 19, 1865. This day is the day our country declared it intent to be better, to realize freedom for all. It would take another 100 years for the impact to begin to be seen in our society and even more disappointing is we are not there yet!
Teach your children this history. Share our failures along side our celebrations of success. My hopes reside with our youth to do better than my generation and those that came before.
Happy Juneteenth America! The day we expanded our understanding of "All men are created equal" to hopefully one day ring true!
*Note…it wasn’t until 1924 Native Americans were allowed to become US Citizens and have the right to vote but that too was limited and regulated by the states until 1957.
Do not let a new federal holiday fool you. There is still much work to be done. Keep pressing and pushing for change
