The Fourth of July is a time for celebrating with family, friends, cookouts, and fireworks, but it’s also one of the busiest times of the year for serious eye injuries. Every year, thousands of people visit emergency rooms with fireworks-related injuries, and nearly half of those injuries involve the eyes.

Whether you’re lighting the fireworks or simply watching the show, protecting your vision should always be a priority.

Here are a few important safety tips:
🎇 Never allow young children to handle fireworks.
🎇 Always keep a safe distance from fireworks after they are lit.
🎇 Never try to relight a firework that didn’t go off.
🎇 Wear protective safety glasses if you’re lighting fireworks.
🎇 Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose nearby in case of emergencies.
🎇 Leave professional fireworks displays to the experts whenever possible.
🎇 Even sparklers can reach temperatures of nearly 2,000°F, hot enough to cause severe burns and permanent eye damage.

If a firework causes an eye injury:
🚫 Do NOT rub your eye.
🚫 Do NOT rinse your eye with water.
🚫 Do NOT remove any object that may be lodged in the eye.
🚫 Do NOT apply pressure to the eye.
✅ Cover the eye loosely with a clean cup or protective shield and seek emergency medical attention immediately.

Many fireworks-related eye injuries can result in permanent vision loss, but most are preventable with a little extra caution.
