June 19, 2026 Juneteenth
Today we honor Juneteenth — the day in 1865 when the last enslaved people in Galveston, Texas were finally informed of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
Juneteenth reminds us that freedom delayed is freedom denied.
At Witness to Innocence, we know this truth intimately. The men and women we represent all wrongfully sentenced to death — had their freedom stolen by a system that too often fails Black and Brown communities. Their eventual exonerations came after years, sometimes decades, of wrongful incarceration.
Freedom should never depend on luck, resources, or relentless advocacy. It should be guaranteed.
On this Juneteenth, we recommit ourselves to:
• Ending the death penalty
• Confronting racial injustice in our legal system
• Centering the voices of the wrongfully convicted
• Ensuring freedom is not delayed for another generation
Freedom is not just a historical milestone — it is ongoing work.
