Trans folks are four times more likely to develop an eating disorder than their cisgender peers. This is because trans people face certain risk factors including:
Rejection from family, friends or peers
Discrimination and prejudice
Pressure to meet body image ideals, both in the q***r community and the mainstream
Daily microaggressions
Q***r people are more likely to experience discrimination, harrassment or denial of services by healthcare providers than their cis, straight peers.
Wanting to pass can make eating disorder recovery complicated, with some folks feeling alienated by some treatment approaches.
Support is shown to be crucial eating disorder recovery for q***r people. I'm not just talking about therapists, but personal supports in their community.
Research shows that trans youth have a lower risk of su***de if their parents are supportive of their identity, which is everything from using the correct name and pronouns, encouraging positive q***r media and supporting them if they want to pursue medical intervention.
If you're q***r and/or trans and struggling with an eating disorder, you are not alone. Your struggles might be ways to cope and feel safe, especially when you're rights are under attack.
