From Corn Waste to Cutting-Edge Medicine: Teen Chemist's Breakthrough in Antiviral Drug Production
Adam Kovalčík, a 19-year-old student from Slovakia, has revolutionized the synthesis of the antiviral drug galidesivir, which targets RNA viruses like COVID-19, Ebola, and Zika. By utilizing furfuryl alcohol derived from corn husks, Kovalčík reduced the production steps from 15 to 10, cutting manufacturing time from nine to five days and lowering costs from $75 to approximately $12.50 per gram.
His innovative approach not only streamlines the production process but also led to the creation of a new molecule, ADK-98, which preliminary models suggest could be up to five times more effective than galidesivir against RNA viruses.
Kovalčík's work earned him the $100,000 George D. Yancopoulos Innovator Award at the 2025 Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair, highlighting the potential of sustainable chemistry in advancing global health.
