Today, we commemorate Flag Day. As Philadelphia's Jesuit High School, we are proud to say that our flag, of course, has local ties. Philadelphia's Betsy Ross is widely credited with sewing the first flag, which was commissioned by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1777. Pennsylvania was the first state in the nation to make it a state holiday in 1937.
The flag was proudly flown during Commencement Exercises (held by incoming Student Council President Jonas Mersch '27 and displayed during the singing of the National Anthem).
As our 1V8, 2V8 A, 2V8 B, Men’s Straight 4-, and U178 boats enter Nationals in Sarasota, FL; Facebook and Instagram will be the best way to stay connected with Prep Crew.
Details regarding livestreams and race updates are forthcoming. Live streaming WILL be available through a third-party.
Stay tuned & GO PREP!

On Saturday, 6/13, Jake Braithwaite, S.J. '07 will be ordained to the priesthood at the Fordham University Church. Born and raised in Villanova, he attended the Prep and Fordham, obtaining a bachelor’s degree in business administration. After a short stint on Wall Street, he returned to Fordham, working in development while getting very involved at the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola in Manhattan. The relationships at the parish identified his budding vocation and pushed him to pursue Jesuit life.
After ordination, Jake will serve as a parochial vicar at Saint Ignatius of Loyola Parish in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts.
Jake is the nephew of Prep Director of Dramatics/Engagement Specialist Tony Braithwaite '89 and has remained connected to Cape and Sword Drama Society (SJP), and several students from the club will be in attendance at the Ordination.
In 2023, Jake participated in a roundtable discussion about the Prep and shared his time on a service trip, noting how it defined his experience and brought him closer to God.

Prior to Commencement Weekend, the Prep hosted the 36th annual Bakari Awards. Directed by the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, this ceremony honors our students of color and the impact they have made on the St. Joseph's Prep Community. In addition to the academic and achievement awards, members of the African American and Latino Alumni Association (A4) presented the graduating students with Kente stoles, which have been worn at graduation since 1991.
