More pets go missing around July 4th than any other time of the year because of fireworks, loud parades, vacations and pet sitters, and parties with doors opening frequently.. a very small percentage of lost cats are ever found which is why even indoor pets should be microchipped. Screened windows should be reinforced with portable accordion screens to prevent a cat from popping out the screen. We get countless reports of cats that push out screens not only when they are scared, but also when a bird, squirrel or bug flies by.

This week is forecast to be a dangerous time due to excessive heat in the triple digits. Please put water out for outside critters. Outside/feral cats can get some cooling relief by putting frozen water bottles into shelters. You can also purchase water bowls that have inserts that can be frozen.

Please keep your cats inside and if you do have indoor/outdoor cats, please get them inside around dusk and before fireworks begin. Create a safe space in the house and consider using pheromone sprays/diffusers, compression wraps (Thunder vest) and soothing music. If your cat (or pet) is especially anxious throughout the year, you may want to consult with your vet about a calming medication. Remember that neighbors may set off loud explosions and backyard fireworks so please take precautions to protect your pets.
