Why deep canvass? Hear it from one of our canvassers:

When we met Pastor Josiah Ludwick in the fall, he expressed his support for our work – but he wasn’t eager to canvass. He doubted strangers would talk with him about voting and the idea of knocking on doors made him uncomfortable.

After attending a Story Workshop, he saw that our space was supportive and grounded in stories of love. Still, he wasn’t convinced it would work. With encouragement from our trainers and the reassurance that he’d canvass in a pair and wouldn’t have to venture out alone, he decided to give it a try.

Shadowing experienced CTC canvasser and organizer Nate DiCamillo, he watched deep canvassing work in action. In their very first conversation—with a baby crying in the background—the voter invited them in (after they took off their shoes) and opened up.

“Once I saw it working in real life, it was amazing,” he reflected. The experience reminded him of something he has learned in his own work as a pastor: leadership requires vulnerability. When we’re willing to be vulnerable, we create space for others to do the same—that’s where real change begins.
