Ghostwalls ! I went to a talk at for the new book as part of the convention in Philly. Super fun night. When I first moved to Philly as an artist I was fascinated by ghost walls but at the same time saddened by the societal challenges they represent. As we lose these historic structures and the vacant lots remain for years that’s one less house to provide our communities. Often from abandonment to neglect and financial challenges as one building crumbles they also begin to erode the structure of their neighbors , water infiltration leading to environmental injustices like mold etc. These plaster walls remaining as the book discuss shed light on the families that once lived there. These buildings can be saved and not torn down. Tangled titles , housing authorities and the land bank hold on to these properties without maintenance that eventually lead to their demolition. We can be educating the next generation of tradespeople to restore and Reactive these historic houses before they crumble.
