Today, we join Philadelphia in mourning the passing of Shirley Kitchen: a true pioneer, public servant, and trailblazer whose life was defined by service to others.
Senator Kitchen broke barriers and opened doors for generations of women, particularly Black women, in public service. Her leadership was never about seeking recognition: it was about creating opportunities, advocating for those whose voices too often went unheard, and leaving every community she touched stronger than she found it.
For so many of us who have dedicated our lives to public service, she was more than a leader, she was an example. She showed us what it meant to lead with courage, conviction, and compassion. She was a mentor, whether through her words, her work, or simply the standard she set.
Philadelphia is better because Shirley Kitchen chose to serve. Her legacy will continue to inspire those of us committed to building a more just, equitable, and compassionate city.
On behalf of the people of the 8th Council District, I extend my deepest condolences to her family, friends, colleagues, and all who were blessed to know and work alongside her.
May she rest in eternal peace.
