We are proud to showcase the environmental stewardship of our nation’s students. Join us in congratulating our President's Environmental Youth Award recipient: Starry Yang from Newtown Square, PA. 🌍💚
Starry Yang created Ecosquash to recycle squash balls, partnering with players, coaches, and the American Recycling Center to turn thousands of used squash balls into playground and track surfaces. Her initiative aims to expand globally, reducing the sport’s environmental impact through community-driven recycling efforts.

🐟 EPA’s Chesapeake Bay Program Office recently visited the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission's Huntsdale Fish Hatchery in Carlisle, PA. 🎣
We learned about the hatchery’s trout stocking and stream restoration efforts—producing tens of thousands of fish each year, including native Brook Trout, a key species of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed Agreement. 🌱🌿
The team helped stock trout in local streams and we observed stream restoration projects funded by EPA Chesapeake Bay Program through their Most Effective Basins Grant Program. 💧
This is a great example of cooperative federalism in action—partners working together to protect and restore our environment.

EPA is awarding funding to Mid-Atlantic states—Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia—to monitor water quality at beaches and keep you safe while swimming! 🏖️💧
Thanks to this funding, states will be able to provide timely alerts if bacteria levels rise and swimming conditions become unsafe. ⚠️ The BEACH Act makes this funding possible.
Enjoy the beaches across the region this summer and stay informed about where you visit.

The moving equipment, known as Pandora, is a spectrometer that tracks the sun and moon to detect minute changes in ultra- violet and visible light. This information is then used to identify the amount of trace gases in the atmosphere as well as validate satellite data.
This effort by & U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will improve long-term monitoring of gases in the region 🔭 🌌

AI technology is transforming waste management at a facility in our region. ♻️
We toured the innovative AMP facility in Portsmouth, Virginia, to see how AMP’s advanced AI-powered system uses computer vision, robotics, and pneumatic air jets. 🤖 This technology automatically detects and separates recyclables and organics from bagged municipal solid waste—eliminating the need for separate recycling bins or trucks. 🚛
What makes it unique: The system sorts raw materials into different streams—recyclables by type, organic matter (which is turned into biochar), and residue that can be converted into biofuel. 🌱🔥
This recycling effort is a gamechanger for the Southeastern Public Service Authority of Virginia, which serves over 1 million residents. 🌍 Starting as a pilot project, AMP partners with SPSA Waste Solutions to demonstrate how cities and regional waste authorities across the country can modernize recycling, reduce environmental impact, and save money. 🔄♻️
