Says the artist:
"My Abstract Assemblages break the plane of two-dimensional art. I create textured and dimensional work that I intricately hand cut and assemble from wood, aluminum, and copper, then finish with colored gesso and modeling paste to bring the surface of the work into conversation with its maze-like depth. Recently, I decided to incorporate trompe l’oeil painting in some of my works to fool the viewer as to what is real and what is painted. Visual mystery is also created by hiding sections of the work behind textured geometric pieces or painted fabric, resulting in a lively interplay between perception and deception. I often work in series, and in my new Zen series, I am incorporating mythical Asian landscapes within my abstract constructions. This visual complexity runs throughout my work, and I trust my intuition, life experiences, and the materials at hand to create works of spatial balance and harmony."

Earlier this year, artist John Y. Wind activated the William M. Reilly Memorial behind the Philadelphia Museum of Art, which features 6 statue of leading figures from the Revolutionary War.

Wind, who maintains a charm jewelry business alongside his fine art career, developed a plan to craft large-scale charm necklaces for each statue. The artist dove into researching the lives of each figure, uncovering a range of cultural origins, personal struggles, triumphs, and mistakes. He then crafted charms representing the lesser-known and overlooked histories he found in his research.

Working with the Association for Public Art () , Wind and a team of art handlers draped the necklaces onto the statues. In effect, the artworks re-contextualized not just the figures they adorned but the American Revolution itself, highlighting the diversity, unexpected connections, and moral dilemmas which were at play during that time but are not often represented in popular versions of history.

“Charm Offensive @ Reilly Memorial,” an exhibition now on view at Park Towne Place, presents the ephemera of Wind’s art intervention at the William M. Reilly Memorial, along with photos, video, and the preceding bureaucratic coordination of the project.
