I came home from with a realization I wasn’t expecting.

This year, I’ve found myself wrestling with parts of NICU medicine that have felt heavier than they used to. I’d quietly convinced myself that those harder parts were mine to figure out alone.

Then I spent the week in room after room filled with healthcare professionals carrying many of the same questions, frustrations, and emotions. I realized that so much of what I’ve been struggling with was rooted in a deep feeling of loneliness… and there is something incredibly freeing about realizing that the weight hasn’t been coming from the work itself.

Medicine can be an incredibly isolating profession. We carry moments that are difficult to explain to people outside of it, and over time it was easy for me to start believing I was the only one carrying them.

This week softened that belief.

Not by solving those problems. They still exist: the difficult conversations, the losses, the uncertainty… they were all waiting when I walk back into the NICU.

But the reminder was just enough: I don’t carry them alone.

To the entire FIGS team, thank you for creating something so much bigger than a retreat. Thank you for believing that healthcare workers deserve to be cared for, too. The thought, intention, and generosity behind every part of this retreat were extraordinary, and I’m so grateful to have been invited into this family.

I left with new friendships, renewed perspective, and a lighter heart than I arrived with. 🤍
