Today we observe Juneteenth, a day that commemorates one of the most significant moments in American history. Although President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, it was not until June 19, 1865, that enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned they were free when Union troops arrived to enforce the order. Juneteenth stands as a powerful reminder of both the promise of freedom and the ongoing pursuit of equity, justice, and opportunity in our nation.
