🇨🇦🇺🇸 Tensions appear to be growing between Canada and the United States over defense spending and military procurement decisions.

Reports indicate that the U.S. has paused its participation in the Permanent Joint Board on Defense, citing concerns about Canada's timeline for meeting NATO’s proposed 3.5% GDP defense spending target and delays surrounding the country's fighter jet replacement program.

Canada is currently reviewing its planned purchase of 88 F-35 fighter jets while also considering alternative options, including Saab’s Gripen. U.S. officials warn that prolonged uncertainty could impact long-term North American defense planning and coordination.

Meanwhile, Ottawa says it remains committed to strengthening national security through an estimated $87 billion, 20-year modernization strategy focused on NORAD upgrades, Arctic sovereignty, and future defense capabilities.
