we return for another vigil in clark park 1-2pm under the zelkova tree, mourning 30,000+ palestinians killed in gaza by the iof since october.
an unknown zionist individual or group has repeatedly attacked the installation in the past week, stripping the tree limbs of printed names of the dead, slashing the permit sign with a blade, pulling flags out of the ground, and tossing objects of reverence and remembrance into public trashcans. our community has decided to remove the ground flags and other elements of the site temporarily while we consider our community’s next steps.
whatever happens to these materials, i and others will continue to hold vigils around the zelkova tree, including today. i hope these events continue to help folks express love, trust, mutual regard, outrage, heartbreak, thoughtfulness, vulnerability—all of everything that makes our community’s rebellious mourning real, transformative, and completely unassailable.

tues 12/12 from 5-7pm we return with renewed rebellious mourning to the vigil installation for palestine in clark park in support of the call for ceasefire and a just peace to follow.
the community vigil space has successfully been defended against threat of removal by parks and recreation and the mayor’s office through the efforts of hundreds of neighbors, local communities of faith, and elected officials united in an interfaith coalition to protect the space through rain and snow.
tomorrow we will again provide a sound system for community members to offer meditative musical presentations, poems of mourning, somatic grief exercises, and any other article of mourning.

Please write city officials NOW to demand an indefinite extension for the mourning site at Clark Park and remain on alert for more announcements on how we can protect it.
“Monday is phenomenally consequential for us all. I urge you [City officials] to stand your employees down well before Monday, clarify your language and stance, and negotiate with our community on equitable and transparent terms so that we can work together to improve what is clearly effective in the community’s collective mourning practices. Your action now stands to save—or endanger—lives.”

“We do this for the college-aged Palestinian Americian girl who showed up before our vigil yesterday and through tears said she had heard about the space but did not yet have the bravery to visit yet. She does not deserve to be alone this winter. For the Palestinian American man who showed up after our vigil yesterday with big wet eyes and said he was “proud he could leave the house today” considering that this morning he “finally broke down for real” in front of his wife and kids. He does not deserve to lose access to the site he walks to several times a week just to clear his head and cry in earnest without worrying he will frighten his kids… grief at this mourning site is far from done.”
