Washington warned that political parties would act as "engines" for ambitious men to seize power and overthrow the democratic process:
In his Farewell Address, Washington warned that political parties were likely to become potent instruments used by "cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men" to undermine popular power, seize government control, and ultimately destroy the very means that brought them to power. He also expressed concerns in the Farewell Address about intense partisanship potentially leading to a loss of public trust in democracy and resulting in despotism. Washington cautioned against changing the government through "usurpation" rather than legal means, viewing it as a common method for the destruction of free governments. He believed that "covert and insidious" internal sabotage posed a significant threat to the Union. Washington considered the "spirit of party" to be particularly dangerous in popular governments, viewing it as their worst enemy. In a draft of his first inaugural address, he also worried that legal frameworks might not withstand "boundless ambition" and "corrupted morals". Overall, Washington feared the republic could collapse if citizens prioritized partisan or regional interests over the national good.
