DPT new grads face a lot of unknowns, but one of the biggest questions they face is this: Should you specialize early and pursue residency training or start broad and refine your path over time?
We decided to dig into this question by sourcing advice from Nick Rainey, PT, DPT, OCS, FAAOMPT, owner of Rainey Pain & Performance, and Jessi Vaught, PT, DPT, NCS, physical therapy advisor at Sheltering Arms Institute, asking how specialties evolve, how different settings shape your day-to-day experience, and what new clinicians should consider as they navigate their next steps.
If you are weighing specialties, exploring residency options, or trying to figure out where you fit within the profession, check out this convo!
Launching Your PT Career: How to Choose a Specialty | Rizing Tide How can a physical therapy student decide which specialty is right for them? Read advice from career pathing experts.
Exploring a specialty starts with a little curiosity.
For Rizing Tide Crest scholar Jude Alvarado, that curiosity led him to electrophysiology and diagnostic ultrasound, a space where technology and clinical insight come together to help PTs better understand and treat patients.
In this video, Jude shares what drew him to this specialty and why he is excited about its future within physical therapy. His interest in this area first grew after attending a Rizing Tide webinar led by Dr. Dimitrios Kostopoulos, PT, DPT, MD, PhD, DSc, ECS, on the specialty.
We’re also grateful to Hands On Diagnostics (HODS), a longtime Rizing Tide partner, for creating opportunities in this specialty through the HODS and AACE Residency in EMG Scholarship. This scholarship (which we administer) provides full funding for a scholar who attends this program. That's about $42,000!
At Rizing Tide, we are proud to support scholars who actively explore new areas and specialties and push their knowledge to new frontiers. After all, growth in this profession starts with asking questions and looking to the future.
