Juneteenth, recognized as a federal holiday in the United States, commemorates the Emancipation of Africans who had been enslaved. This annual observance takes place on June 19, marking the anniversary of General Order No. 3, announced by Union Army General Gordon Granger in 1865, which declared enslaved individuals in Texas free.
The holiday originated in Galveston, Texas, and has since spread to various regions across the country. It not only celebrates emancipation but also broadly recognizes and honors African-American culture. Juneteenth was officially recognized as a federal holiday in June 2021, following the signing of the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act by President Joe Biden. The Juneteenth flag serves as a poignant symbol of this remarkable day.
It's important to note that President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, intending to liberate enslaved individuals in Texas and other secessionist Southern states. However, the ex*****on of the proclamation was largely dependent on the advancement of Union troops. Due to Texas's remote location and the lack of Union military presence, the enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation was sluggish and inconsistent.
Slavery was not universally abolished even with the proclamation in effect; it persisted in states that remained in the Union. This injustice was rectified with the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment on December 6, 1865, which abolished chattel slavery across the entire nation. The last group of enslaved individuals, held by the Choctaw Nation who had sided with the Confederacy, gained their freedom in 1866.
