In Switzerland, scientists developed edible water bubbles made from seaweed extract, offering an eco-friendly alternative to plastic bottles. Called “Ooho,” these biodegradable capsules can be eaten whole or discarded, breaking down naturally within weeks.
The invention tackles one of the world’s biggest pollution sources: single-use plastics. Every year, billions of plastic bottles end up in landfills and oceans, taking centuries to degrade. By replacing bottles at marathons and festivals, these bubbles eliminate tons of waste.
The bubbles are made by forming a thin membrane of seaweed around water droplets. They are safe, cheap, and scalable, making them ideal for large public events where bottled water is distributed in massive quantities.
If adopted worldwide, edible bubbles could dramatically cut down on plastic waste, helping both cities and ecosystems breathe cleaner. It’s a small invention with global potential for big impact.
