Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom and a reminder that freedom delayed is freedom denied.

On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, enslaved Black people in Galveston, Texas finally learned they were free. That history matters because Juneteenth is not just about the end of slavery. It is about truth, resilience, liberation, and the ongoing fight to make America live up to its own promises.

For Black Americans, Juneteenth honors generations who survived the unimaginable and still built families, communities, movements, culture, power, and hope. For America, it is a call to remember that democracy is not automatic. It must be defended, expanded, and made real for everyone.

Today, that work continues from protecting voting rights and Black history, to fighting attacks on DEI, advancing criminal justice reform, improving maternal health, expanding housing access, and closing economic gaps that still shape too many lives.

Freedom was never handed over politely. It was fought for. Let’s keep fighting.
