Last week a 4.3 million dollar fine was handed out to MD Anderson for a stolen laptop that was unencrypted and for two unencrypted jump drives. This brings the total number of fines to over $64,000,000 for 2018, which eclipses the $48.7 total of 2017. With six months left in the year, we are still trending towards over $100,000,000 in fines for 2018 (see chart below).

Judge Upholds $4.3M Data Breach Fine Against MD Anderson But the cancer center plans to appeal.

I wanted to inform you of the following story that was just released à Respiratory therapy supplier agrees to pay $875K to settle data breach lawsuit.

This settlement comes in addition to the $239,000 fine they were handed in 2016. It should be noted that the employees of the company are the ones who filed the class action lawsuit.

All companies, regardless of size, need to take reasonable steps towards protecting the data they possess as business owners. The information in red below comes directly from the article.

The settlement (PDF) resolves a lawsuit filed last fall that claimed Lincare failed to implement “the most basic security safeguards” to prevent a breach.

Although the breach did not involve patient information, it served as a reminder that healthcare organizations are also susceptible to breaches involving employees, with significant liability in some cases.”

As of today, there have already been over $60,000,000 in fines handed out because of data breaches. We are currently trending to over $163,000,000 (see below) for the year.
