The Cactus Doctor
The Cactus Doctor
The spine of a cactus is actually a heavily modified leaf, as opposed to a thorn which is a modified branch. They serve the twin functions of protecting the plant from being eaten and preventing water loss by providing shade and restricting air flow.
Are cactus plants ever edible? If you guessed yes, you know your culinary plants. In fact, prickly pear and some chollas are edible and can be quite delicious if prepared properly -- and carefully.
White mounds on a prickly pear or cholla cactus are signs of a mealybug infestation. The insect attaches to the plant and secretes a powdery wax layer for protection and housing. If detected early, the bugs can be sprayed off.
