You’ve probably seen recent headlines about screwworms. While there is no need to panic, it’s always a good idea to stay informed and take simple precautions to protect your pets.

Screwworm flies are attracted to open wounds, cuts, surgical sites, and irritated skin. The best defense is prevention:

✔ Check your pets regularly for cuts, scrapes, hot spots, or skin irritation.
✔ Keep wounds clean and monitor them closely.
✔ Stay current on flea and fly control products recommended by your veterinarian.
✔ Keep outdoor areas clean and free of excess waste that can attract flies.
✔ Contact your veterinarian promptly if you notice a wound that isn’t healing, unusual drainage, swelling, or increased irritation.

For most pet owners, routine preventative care and regular inspections are the best way to keep pets healthy and protected.

Like many herding breeds, she is naturally protective of her home and the people she cares about. She does best with experienced dog owners who understand and appreciate these traits and can provide clear leadership and structure.
