Covenant Academy

Throughout this school year, our elementary art students have continued doing art observation and imitation studies each month. During this activity, they are given a piece of artwork to look at and try to notice the details of. They then must put it face down and work at replicating it from memory. They are then given a minute to look back at the original and see what they forgot, before having a few minutes to finish off their version.

It's less about making a perfect copy in a matter of minutes of art that took hours, days, weeks, months, or even years to complete, and more about noticing the beauty and details and thoughtfulness of each piece. We want them to be able to recognize beauty when they see it.
