Civil rights organizations file complaint against Pittsburgh Public Schools ahead of closures 07/15/2026

"For decades, the district has under resourced schools that mostly Black students go to. As that has happened over the years you see the enrollment decline."

daBlack students constitute only 49 percent of the District's student population, they
represent 62 percent of the students who will permanently lose their school building and 54
percent of the students who will be displaced under the Plan.39 These disparities are substantial
and foreseeable, and they fall most heavily on Black students and Black communities throughout
the District.

Yesterday, we filed a civil rights complaint with the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission challenging a recent vote by the Pittsburgh Public Schools Board to close twelve schools, predominantly in Black neighborhoods.

Families attending Pittsburgh Public Schools are part of a national school closures crisis targeting Black and Latine communities.

Black and Latine communities, which are systemically denied equal access to education by our public school system, are on the front lines of the fight to not only protect neighborhood schools, but also build a free, liberatory system of education for all.
