Leading Lady Penelope Padgett Hodgson Craven Barker was the organizer of the Edenton Tea Party, a Colonial Activist known as the leader of one of the first women’s political demonstrations in the United States, and the first women’s political demonstration in North Carolina.
The boycotting of goods became a popular way to strike back against Britain for the taxing of goods sent to the colonies. Learn about how Leading Lady Penelope Barker and the fifty-one women known as the Edenton Ladies Patriotic Guild strategized their purchases to leverage their own battle against the Crown in response to the 1773 Tea Act. Penelope's paper doll is available now on WildRootCreations.com.
There is one known image of Penelope. It is located at the Cupola House in Edmonton, North Carolina. This is my artistic interpretation of Penelope Barker's likeness based on the sources available to me.

Star, Leading Lady Sybil Ludington’s Revolutionary Ride Horse, is an important part of the story! Sybil’s father trusted his daughter to complete the ride to warn the people of Carmel, Mahopac, Mahopac Falls, Kent Cliffs, Farmers Mills, and Stormville that the British had burned Danbury, Connecticut; retrieve his militia, and return home safely.
Colonel Ludington trusted his horse to maintain the strength to bring his daughter, Sybil, back home. Star and Sybil did the job! Animals are often utilized for the work that we complete, and they go into battle with us and for us. We should honor their involvement, thank them for their duty, and pay tribute to their loss. What is known of Star aside from the Revolutionary Ride is brief. This rendering is not taken from any known imagery of Star, but is my own imagined image of the horse's likeness. Star’s pattern is available now. All artwork is the creation of InterArtist Jen Haefeli, Wild Root Creations®.
All Leading Lady patterns are available now on www.WildRootCreations.com
107 years ago today the 19th Amendment was passed, but the march and the fight for womens rights was far from over, and the work is still far from done.
Don’t dim your lights. Don’t quiet your voices. Don’t dull your colors. Keep moving forward.
