Your business is one outage away from going dark. 👇
🌐 Your internet connection is the lifeline of your business. And most small business owners don't realize how exposed they are — until it's too late.
Think about everything that runs over your internet connection right now:
📞 Phone calls & video meetings
💳 Card payments & invoicing
📧 Email & customer communications
☁️ Cloud software & file access
If your connection goes down, your business stops. It's that simple.
But here's the good news — protecting yourself is simpler than you think. Here are three steps every small business should take:
1 - Get a backup connection: A 4G/5G backup router kicks in automatically if your main line drops. Affordable, easy to set up, and potentially business-saving.
2 - Check your speed is actually enough: More staff, more video calls, more cloud tools — your bandwidth needs grow with your business. When did you last review your plan?
3 - Move your phone system to the cloud: A hosted phone system works over the internet — meaning your team can take calls from anywhere, even if the office goes offline.
Your internet connection is infrastructure — treat it like one. A small investment in resilience today can save you thousands in lost business tomorrow.
At Opticom Consulting, we help small businesses review and strengthen their connectivity — quickly, affordably, and without the tech jargon.

Why Your Upload Speed Number is Misleading You
When business owners compare broadband and fiber upload speeds, they often see something like this: broadband at 100 Mbps vs. fiber at 50 Mbps — and assume broadband wins because the number is bigger.
It's an easy assumption to make. But that number doesn't tell the whole story.
Think of it this way: a car that can go 100 mph on weekends is not better than a car that goes 50 mph every hour of every day — especially when you have deliveries to make.
Broadband upload speeds fluctuate. During peak hours, that 100 Mbps can drop significantly as your connection shares bandwidth with others in your area. Fiber, on the other hand, delivers consistent, dedicated speeds because it transmits data as light through glass strands rather than electrical signals through copper cable — which also means less lag and a more responsive connection overall.
For your business, consistency isn't a luxury. It's a requirement.

Email malware campaigns have become a common method for cybercriminals who use social engineering tactics to trick users into compromising their systems. Attackers often disguise their emails to appear as if they’re coming from reputable organizations or trusted contacts. In many cases, these emails prompt recipients to click on links or open attachments, leading to the download of malicious software. For instance, phishing emails may direct you to fraudulent websites designed to steal your credentials, while spear phishing involves highly targeted emails that use personal details to appear authentic. Some campaigns even embed malicious code within images—a technique known as steganography—to bypass traditional security measures.
Forbes Magazine recently reported that criminals are using a novel way to put malware on your computer using email.
