DANGER ZONE! Curves are the most likely place for a rider to experience a “single vehicle“ crash. In other words, the rider is the only vehicle involved, and the crash involves a loss of control. IN THIS PIC … what are the unknowns and what can you detect based on the information available? ie: how sharp is the curve, what should your entry speed be, etc. Having discussions away from riding (like dissecting this pic) can be extremely useful tools to improve our riding chops! QUIZ TIME! What can you see and what is hidden … Our advice - “If you just don’t know it’s best to slow”™ / Ridin’Rhymes™
FYI - the delivery van is actually backing up into that side street. Riders will often find that little crack of opportunity (as that vehicle backs up, we ’could’ squeeze by) … but in doing so, what will we encounter on the other side? STAY AWARE of vehicles, road signs, bushes, trees and buildings that obscure our vision and/or the vision of a vehicle about to pull out … Part of the on-road coaching program at Stayin' Safe Motorcycle Training

Nice turnout for the monthly Harley Owner's Group, Pittsburgh Chapter #2224 meeting as I discussed the challenges during the “100 Deadliest Days“ of Summer (teen drivers, towing of vehicles and anticipated holiday travel) , Paul’s Law (no use of handheld devices in effect) and an upcoming documentary on the “VooDoo Lounge” - an historic Pgh Venue that was a combination of Bikers, Bankers, Bachelorettes and Boilermakers!

"Stay Wide"... aka a "late apex" or "wait apex" is something we coach with the Stayin' Safe Motorcycle Training on-road program. Too often we see riders cutting the line inside too soon resulting in running wide as they exit the curve. Granted - this famous curve is a challenge regardless, but highlights all the techniques of safely and expertly navigating a curve on a live road. On a track, with known curves and known conflicts, the outside-inside-outside line can be taken with confidence (most of the time) ... on "live" roads with potentially unknown curvatures and unknown conflicts (debris, traffic, intersections, wildlife), it pays to stay wide until you can see the exit point and then decide on your next move. Remember, "Clear the View, Then Roll it Thru"™ / part of The Friction Zone's Ridin'Rhymes™ collection of riding tips!
