Lion Man debuted in All-Negro Comics #1 (June 1947) and is widely recognized by comics historians as one of the earliest Black superheroes—appearing nearly two decades before Black Panther.

Created by Orrin Cromwell Evans and illustrated by George J. Evans Jr., Lion Man represented a groundbreaking step in comic book history by featuring a Black hero who was depicted as a strong, intelligent, college-educated scientist and jungle adventurer, an intentional counter to the racist stereotypes common in 1940s media.

He was sent by the United Nations to the Gold Coast (modern-day Ghana) to guard “Magi Mountain,” a site containing a massive uranium deposit.

His mission: prevent foreign powers from obtaining uranium to build atomic weapons in the early Cold War era.

The Significance of All-Negro Comics

All-Negro Comics was the first comic book created entirely by Black writers and artists. Evans launched it to provide positive, empowering representations of Black Americans at a time when mainstream comics often relied on caricatures and racist imagery.

Why It Lasted Only One Issue

Despite strong ambition and completed work for a second issue:

Major (white-owned) distributors refused to carry it.
Newsprint suppliers declined service.
Retail outlets would not stock the book.

The project was effectively blocked from broader circulation.

Legacy

Though short-lived, Lion Man’s impact was profound:

One of the first Black superheroes in American comics
An early example of Afrofuturist and Pan-African themes
A precursor to later characters like Black Panther
Recently revived through public domain status and renewed scholarly interest in the 2020s

Lion Man represented something revolutionary in 1947: a brilliant, capable Black hero protecting global security—not as a side character, but as the central figure of his own story.

He may have appeared in only one issue, but he helped open the door for generations of Black superheroes to follow.
