“I was stationed in Germany my whole tour. I wanted to see the man who saved my father’s life in Brussels during WWII. My father’s name was Milton Stewart. I walked in the shop, and the lady behind the counter started to well up. She said to her husband, “Julian, it’s little Milton.” We all just hugged. They closed their shop for the day and took me all over Brussels. They told me how they saved him from getting shot by the Germans. He hid behind a fireplace. He couldn’t get out because the Germans had raided Brussels. The man pulled the fireplace out and said, “go hide in there.” My father was in there three days. When the Allies came back, he let my father go.”

“I served from 1977 to 2000. I wanted to join the Air Force, but I missed it by one point, so they told me I could go into a different branch. I went down to the Army, and they said, ‘How would I like to make 2,500 bucks?’ I said sure. They said, ‘well you gotta leave today.’ I said, 'I don’t care.' They said, ‘you’re going into the infantry.’ I said, 'I don’t care.' So that’s what I did.”
