Hydrogen fuel cells generate electricity by combining hydrogen and oxygen atoms. This process occurs in a completely clean way, producing only water and heat as byproducts.

Essentially, hydrogen fuel cells are like batteries that never lose charge as long as they're supplied with hydrogen. They work through a two-step process. First, at the anode, hydrogen gas is split into protons and electrons, and then the electrons are forced to travel through an external circuit (thus producing an electric current) to rejoin the protons and oxygen in a cathode, where water is formed. With high energy efficiency and zero emissions (aside from water), hydrogen fuel cells have the potential to significantly reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and help mitigate the impacts of climate change. However, challenges remain, particularly in the production, storage, and transportation of hydrogen.
