A talented team of The University of Arizona architecture students has designed an award-winning therapeutic memory care garden for The Hacienda at The River, thoughtfully incorporating resident feedback and the latest research in healing landscapes. Their design, honored by the AzASLA, features accessible pathways, sensory-rich plantings, and shaded spaces to support wellness, autonomy, and joyful moments outdoors.

This collaboration sets a new standard for outdoor environments in senior living. We are excited to bring these inspiring ideas to more Watermark communities nationwide.

Residents at East Village Place recently welcomed Reborns With Reasons, an outreach program that uses reborn dolls as therapeutic tools for people living with dementia. The visit sparked meaningful moments of connection, conversation, and comfort, creating opportunities for residents to engage in ways that felt natural and familiar.

Did you know that 85% of LGBTQ+ older adults worry about experiencing discrimination based on their sexual orientation or gender identity when seeking long-term care? LGBTQ+ older adults are also twice as likely to be single and three to four times less likely to have children than their heterosexual peers. This means they often lack traditional family support systems and may rely more heavily on chosen family and community for support.

That's why creating welcoming, inclusive, and affirming environments is so important.

As Pride Month comes to a close, we're reflecting on the meaningful celebrations and conversations that took place across our communities nationwide. From vibrant drag performances and educational speakers to resident-led discussions and moments of connection, these events helped foster understanding, belonging, and acceptance for all.

Thank you to our residents, associates, families, and partners who helped make Pride Month so special. Together, we're building communities where everyone feels seen, valued, and at home.
