“ABA is child abuse.”

No, it’s not.

For my son, ABA is how we teach the skills most people take for granted: communication, daily living, safety. It’s how we help him learn not to run into traffic, not to swallow non-edible items, not to hurt himself or others.

You might not understand what it means to raise a child with profound autism and dangerous behaviors. That’s okay. But don’t tell me the therapy that’s helping him function AND stay alive is abuse.

ABA done right isn’t about forcing kids to be something they’re not. It’s about giving them a chance to engage with the world. To be seen. To be heard. To live.

If you’ve never had to fight for your child to learn how to stay alive, maybe don’t speak over those of us who have.

The one thing every parent can do is talk to their children about being kind, being inclusive, inviting others to play, knowing that differences don’t mean less…. April is a good time to remember to have this conversation.

Kindness raises kindness.
