ONCE MAYTAG – NOW WHIRLPOOL - The Maytag Washing Machine Company was founded in 1893 by businessman Frederick Maytag. In 1925, Maytag Washing Machine Company became Maytag, Inc. Frederick's son Elmer Henry Maytag took over as president of the company from 1926 until his own death in 1940. In 1926, five train loads of washing machines were shipped ou of their factory in Newton, IA. During the Great Depression of the 1930s, the company was one of the few to make a profit.

In 1926, the Plattsburgh Maytag business, now known as Wilson Appliance Store, was owned by Edward Vincent, E. V." Wilson.
E. V. Wilson began selling Maytag wringer washing machines as a door-to-door salesman in 1921 and opened his first dedicated showroom in Plattsburgh in 1926. The company is still family-owned and operated today by his grandson, Nathan Wilson.
E. V. died in 1956 at his home at 32 Broad Street in Plattsburgh and was buried in the Mount Carmel Cemetery. He was born son of the late Mr. & Mrs. Edward S Wilson. The family moved to Gouverneur when he was still a child, and he received his education there.
Mr. Wilson served in the US Navy during WWI. After his discharge, he married Lila McCormick of Pyrites in Canton on Mar 4, 1919. He came to Plattsburgh in 1927 and opened his first appliance store on Margaret St. In 1940, he moved to his present location.
Mr. Wilson was at one time a city supervisor.

Did your parents or grandparents own a Maytag washing machine? We wonder where the fleet of 1926 Model T trucks is now.

The photo, taken at a D & H Freight House is in our permanent collection.
